Monomethylamine is a basic alkylamine and is a primary amine in its simplest form. It is a colorless gas co-produced with dimethylamine (DMA) and trimethylamine (TMA). It has a strong fishy odor. It is used as a building block for the synthesis of many other commercial compounds. It is used to produce a variety of chemical derivatives such as N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), Monomethylethanolamine (MMEA), Methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), Metam sodium, Triazines, etc. Monomethylamine is usually sold as an anhydrous gas in pressurized containers or as solution in water.
It is available as anhydrous (liquified gas under pressure) & 40%, 45% & 50% solution. Clear, colorless liquid with strong ammoniacal odor.

As a raw material for the manufacture of systemic insecticides like Dimethoate, Carbaryl, and Carbofuron and fungicides like Sodium N-Methyl Dithiocarbamate and as a raw material to manufacture Monomethylacetoacetamide.
Used in the manufacture of dyestuff intermediates like N-Methyl Aniline, N-Methyl J Acid, Sarcosine, and Anthraquinone derivatives.
As a raw material to manufacture explosive boosters like Tetryl-Unsymmetrical Dimethyl-hydrazine and explosive sensitizers like Monomethylamine Nitrate.
Natural Gas Treatment
Methyldiethanolamine manufactured using MMA is used as a selective absorbent for H2S gas during purification of petrochemicals in refineries.
In manufacturing Monomethyl Hydrazine which is one of the ingredients of rocket fuel.
As an intermediate or catalytic agent for drugs like Adrenaline, Ephedrine and Pethidine. Vasodilators like Theophylline and Caffeine are manufactured from Dimethyl Urea derived from MMA.
For manufacturing resins.
MMA (anhydrous) should be stored in a suitably designed pressure vessel. MMA solution drums should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated area away from sources of ignition. Avoid contact with copper and its alloys. Store in tightly closed containers in a cool, well-ventilated area away from heat.
Health & Safety
Monomethylamine is irritating to the skin, eyes, and mucous membrane. In case of contact, the affected area is to be washed with plenty of water at least for 15 minutes.
In case of inhalation, the victim should be moved to fresh air and oxygen should be administered. In case of ingestion, the victim should be made to consume a copious quantity of milk and water. Medical advice should be sought at once.
Personal protective equipment should always be used while handling.
