Acetonitrile, also known as MeCN (methyl cyanide), is the simplest organic nitrile. It is widely used as a solvent in life sciences, petrochemicals and in the purification of biologics.

Storage

  • Can be stored in a safe manner in closed containers for a long period. Avoid contact with copper and its alloys. Acetonitrile drums should be stored in a cool and well ventilated area, away from sources of ignition.

Health & Safety

  • Acetonitrile is irritating to skin, eyes and the mucous membrane.
  • In case of contact, the affected area is to be washed with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
  • In case of inhalation, the victim should be moved to fresh air and oxygen should be administered.
  • In case of ingestion, the victim should be made to consume copious quantities of milk and water.
  • Medical advice should be sought at once.
