General information

Monoisopropylamine (MIPA) is a hygroscopic colorless liquid with an ammonia-like odor. It is miscible with water and flammable. It is a valuable intermediate in the chemical industry. It is used in agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and dyestuff. It is a regulating agent for plastics, intermediate in organic synthesis of coating materials, plastics, pesticides, rubber chemicals, pharmaceuticals and as an additive in the petroleum industry.

Applications

  • applications
    Agro Chemicals

As solvents for herbicides like 2,4-D and Glyphosate formulation. As raw material for herbicides like Atrazine, Propazine Ameturyne & Prometryne.

  • applications
    Pharmaceutical

As a raw material for heart drugs like Atenolol, Propanolol, and Metoprolol Tartrate. As raw material for antileprotic drugs like Clofazimine.

  • applications
    Dyestuff

In the dyestuff industry in manufacturing azo dye complexes & solvent dyes.

Storage

  • Anhydrous MIPA has a low boiling point hence precaution should be taken while storing. Handling MIPA anhydrous in glass bottles is dangerous. Great care should be taken while opening drums and vials of the sample, because of its high vapor pressure. Avoid contact with copper and its alloys.

Health & Safety

  • Monoisopropylamine is irritating to the skin, eyes, and mucous membrane. In case of contact, the affected area should be washed with plenty of water at least for 15 minutes. A dilute solution of acetic acid (2%) should be used to neutralize the amine. Continuous inhalation of fumes and ingestion should be avoided. In event of inhalation or ingestion, the victim should be moved to fresh air and oxygen should be administered. Vapors of acetic acid (2%) or vinegar diluted 1:5 with water should be inhaled. To dilute the chemical in the stomach, the patient should consume a copious quantity of milk and water.
  • A medical practitioner should be consulted at once.
  • Personal protective equipment should always be used while handling.
