Dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA) is a diamine that can be used in the preparation of some surfactants, including cocamidopropyl betaine which is an ingredient in many personal care products such as soaps, shampoos and cosmetics. DMAPA-derivatives are appropriate for shampoos as they do not sting the eyes and also make fine-bubble foams.

    Surfactants

    In manufacturing betaines which in turn find application for formulation of shampoos, liquid soaps, hand washing gel, foam boosters, hair conditioners / colorants, sun shielding agents, surfactants for dishwashing detergents, floor cleaners etc.

    Synthetic dyes & paints for cotton, silk / synthetic fibers, leather, paper, hair and special printing inks etc.

    Adhesives & Coatings

    As a cross linking & bonding agent for epoxy novolac resins which are used to make adhesives & protective coating having great bonding strength.

    Fuel Additives

    Derivatives based on DMAPA can be used in fuels as cloud point reducers, dispersants & stabilizers for prevention of deposits / icing and reduction of octane number requirement.

    Derivatives can be used as dispersants, V.I. improvers, antioxidants & corrosion inhibitors for lubricants.

    Flocculants

    Water soluble cationic polyelectrolytes based on DMAPA act as a flocculant in removing floating solids & oil from waste water. Same can be used as a drilling fluid in the mining industry for recovering coal dust & minerals from the wash water.

Storage

  • Can be stored in a safe manner in closed containers for a long period. Avoid contact with copper and its alloys.
  • DMAPA drums should be stored in a cool and well ventilated area, away from source of ignition.

Health & Safety

  • DMAPA is irritating to skin, eyes and the mucous membrane.
  • In case of contact, the affected area should be washed with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
  • In case of inhalation, victims should be moved to fresh air and oxygen should be administered.
  • In case of ingestion, victims should be made to consume copious quantities of milk and water. Medical advice should be sought at once. Personal protective equipment should always be used while
    handling.
