General information

Diethylamine is a colorless liquid having an odor that closely resembles the strong smell of ammonia. It is a flammable, weakly alkaline liquid that is miscible with most solvents and finds its use as a corrosion inhibitor in making rubber, pharmaceuticals, resins, pesticides and dyes.

Storage

  • Diethylamine can be stored in a safe manner in closed containers for a long period. However, they should not come in contact with copper and its alloys.

Health & Safety

  • Diethylamine is irritating to the skin, eyes, and mucous membrane. In case of contact, the affected area should be washed with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. A dilute solution of Acetic Acid (2%) may be used to neutralize the amine.
  • Continuous inhalation of fumes should be avoided. In the event of inhalation, the victim should be moved to fresh air and oxygen should be administered. In case of ingestion, the victim should be made to consume a copious quantity of milk and water. A medical practitioner should be consulted at once.
  • Personal protective equipment should always be used while handling.
